Barnes - Well, I can't speak for "everyone" but here's my rationale as far as Shades is concerned:
(i) It is fundamental to Credo's role in the story that he is skilled in the use of mixing chemicals and potions etc. He uses these to manipulate people's beliefs.
(ii) I chose to set his "origin story" in the 16th Century because of the religious turmoil taking place in England (and elsewhere) at that time.
(iii) Although these two elements are entirely unconnected, if you have a character who mixes chemicals in the 16th Century, he just is an alchemist. There's no big deal about it, that's just what such people were called.

Good Choice but if he turns out to be Nicholas Flamel, i will refuse to read this comic any further
